A reintroduction of a basket design made over 100 years ago, this Traditional English Stave Basket reflects a once-common form used on local farms for apple and potato harvests. John Williamson has revived the lost art of Devon stave basket making using original museum transcripts, alongside archival research and the work of photographer James Ravilious, who documented rural life in the region during the 1970s and 80s.

Today, the craft is recognized by the Heritage Crafts Association as endangered, making each piece both functional and historically significant.

The stave basket is hefty and built to last. Ideal for harvest gathering, garden storage, or as a functional decorative piece in the home.

Working from his home in the Teign Valley, he produces a limited number of baskets each year using Willow and Larch—materials chosen for their unique functional qualities. His work preserves both a craft and a way of life closely tied to the Devon landscape.
