A simple demonstration of physics that never seems to lose its magic. Handmade in Germany, this glass light mill, or radiometer, spins when placed in bright sunlight or near a strong light source. Set on an elegant blown glass pedestal, it makes a fascinating addition to a desk, bookshelf, or windowsill—an object that invites curiosity with every turn.

Invented in the 19th century, the radiometer contains four lightweight vanes with black and reflective sides inside a partial vacuum. As light warms the dark surfaces more than the reflective ones, the remaining gas molecules transfer energy unevenly, causing the vanes to rotate.
