A special collaboration between Rivalin and Gardenheir, this Charentaise pairs traditional French slipper-making with a richly colored tartan wool and a soft natural wool lining.
Named for the Charente region of southwestern France, the Charentaise began as a practical slipper worn inside wooden clogs for added warmth and comfort. Early makers repurposed felt from the region’s paper mills, creating a soft, insulating shoe that would become a French household staple. Tartan uppers later became one of its most recognizable features.
Our version carries that tradition forward with Rivalin, a family-run maker in Brittany whose workshop dates to 1925. Each pair is made using the traditional cousu-retourné technique, stitched inside out, then turned right side out to tuck the seams away to prevent the stitching from rubbing against the foot and protects the thread from external wear and tear. Deep green, brown, and navy checks are crossed with fine lines of red and gold, finished with dark brown binding.
Inside, soft natural wool surrounds the foot, providing warmth while helping regulate temperature. Underfoot, a thick five-warp felt sole offers substantial cushioning and support, with an anti-slip finish for added grip. Simple, easy to slip on, and made for everyday wear around the house.

Size & Fit
Size & Fit
In our experience, the slippers tend to run a little small, but as a general rule, it’s best to choose your usual size. Your feet may feel slightly snug for the first few hours, but the slippers will gently loosen with wear, molding to your foot.
If you often hesitate between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger of the two.

Brand Description
Since 1925, Rivalin has been crafting traditional French Charentaises and clogs in its workshop in Quimper, Brittany. For four generations, the family-run atelier has preserved the art of the traditional cousu-retourné technique, in which each Charentaise is carefully assembled and sewn by hand.
Rooted in French craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for quality materials, Rivalin combines time-honored techniques with a contemporary approach to color, pattern, and design. The collections feature carefully selected natural and recycled materials, bringing new life to the classic Charentaise while maintaining its distinctive comfort and character.
Recognized as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV), Rivalin continues to uphold a nearly century-old tradition of French shoemaking, creating pieces that balance heritage, comfort, and enduring design.
