A simple demonstration of physics that never seems to lose its magic. Handmade in Germany, this glass light mill, or radiometer, spins when placed in bright sunlight or near a strong light source. Encased in a hand-blown teardrop-shaped glass vessel, it brings gentle movement and quiet fascination to a sunny window, making a thoughtful gift for anyone with a curious mind.

Invented in the 19th century, the radiometer contains four lightweight vanes with black and reflective sides inside a partial vacuum. As light warms the dark surfaces more than the reflective ones, the remaining gas molecules transfer energy unevenly, causing the vanes to rotate.
